A Portrait of Grass Roots America - Edisto Island, South Carolina
In 1970, Mr. Weldon Bell moved to Edisto Beach, SC to pursue the American dream of work and determination meeting opportunity. The Edisto shrimp provided many with a viable income. Although ignorant to the ways of maritime life, Mr. Bell decided to give it a go.
After continued success in trawling the quiet sea island shores of Edisto, he purchased the land and built Bell Buoy Seafood. It remained, through 37 years, a place where shrimp boat captains could call home and earn a living. In 2007, the Bells retired to Tennessee and the building and dock were left to be razed.
I have reclaimed a majority of the wood planks that so many have graced. Through the the years, the planks stood against high tides, rain, and the relentless Carolina sun. Not to mention, heavy laden carts filled with shrimp, marring the boards. When considering a plank for a dock wood frame, I make it a point to keep the rusty nails intact, along with other outstanding variations in the wood. Every board is truly unique!
